The song you just heard was Sweaty linen by Surf Ninja 3. I'm Sophia Magnanini, your host and you're listening to Oak City Move. Today we are joined by some very special guests, CJ Jones and Destiny Womack, who are here to talk about the research as well as the upcoming African American Cultural Research Symposium coming up. If one of you guys just want to start off by saying what this symposium is about and also talk about.

00:57
CJ Jones
Your research and go first really quick. My name is CJ Jones. I'm a third year in Applied Nutrition with two minors in Africana Studies and Global Health. My pronouns are she, hers and yeah.

01:13
Destinee Wormack
Yes, I'm Destiny Wommack. I am a second year doctoral student in the Counseling Counselor Education program here. My pronouns are she, hers and my dissertation research interest is on Black maternal health looking at the grief experiences following pregnancy, loss of a miscarriage, abortion or involuntary termination. Yeah so the symposium is called the Symposium of Afrofuturism and Afro Diasporic Scholarship. And so with the symposium is allowing students and community members to share their research as it relates to in different ways of storytelling, discussion circles, creative work and particularly with CJ and I we will be doing a poster presentation for the conference.

02:26
CJ Jones
Our presentation it all revolves around Destiny Said, the different narratives of women and then of people who do share these Afro futuristic ideas and concepts to further our scholarship and further our understanding of different topics that relate to the world around us, how we interact with the world around us and the experiences that people have every single day.

02:53
Destinee Wormack
Yes. So Fred, our project or our proster it is about pregnancy and custody. We're looking to fill those research gaps as relates to women of color that are in the are incarcerated in these prison systems and what their maternal health outcomes are looking like in bringing life into the world if they are even able to bring life and it's not leading to miscarriage or any other traumatic birth experience. And so looking at what's happening right now and what can be done to implement Policy to make some changes that need to be made, I'm.

03:39
CJ Jones
Really excited to share is to study a population that's underrepresented, population that's not recorded on, a population that you don't hear too much about because that's the point. They don't want you to hear about it. So one part that I'm really excited for this symposium, especially with all the other presentations, presentation presenters. There we go. I almost didn't get the word. Alongside all of our other presenters, I think we're giving where we're sharing ideas that aren't always inherently talked about. They're not brought up in conversation normally or casually. These are conversations that you have to seek out.

04:18
CJ Jones
So on February 19th we will be doing the symposium so you know, everybody can come to the Witherspoon center and see all the different presenters 10am to 4pm and then we'll just be around to talk to everybody so they can learn about our studies and learn about what we've been looking at. And that's one thing that I'm super excited about and I'm so excited to see everybody who comes.

04:40
Sophs Magnanini
No, that's extremely exciting. Especially like you were saying, this isn't something that it's really people search out. It's something that has to be brought up and it's so important that you guys are doing that because then it kind of paves the way for others and for more research to come for this topic. Is the symposium just for students or is it other outside people or faculty?

05:05
Destinee Wormack
Yeah, it's open to everyone to attend and there is a variety of people that are presenting as relates to students, faculty, community members particularly this year I believe it's just students but again anyone is able to come and support and learn new information. And then following the symposium we do have a graduate student mixer happening at 5:30 at the 1887 Bistro in Talley Student Union. If anyone is interested, food will be provided. It's an opportunity to network and connect with alumni, with current grad students and we are also hoping to get alumni and grad students not just from NC State, but across North Carolina if possible too. So yeah, we are very excited about that piece as well.

06:06
Sophs Magnanini
Bringing everyone together, opening it up to the public is also just really cool and important that you guys are doing that as well as the mixer. Shout out 1887 Bistro. But it's just a great opportunity for so many people to and discuss and network especially about very important topics that are very needed during this time that we are in. Is there anything else that you guys would like to say?

06:33
Destinee Wormack
I think we've pretty much summarized everything and if you want to learn more, how about, you know, I think everyone should come on out and see what we have to say and what everyone that's presenting has to say what their. Because there's a lot of interesting topics happening and so we're thankful to be in the number and we hope to see everyone there. So again, thank you so much for the opportunity to interview us today. Yeah, yeah, thank you.

06:58
Sophs Magnanini
Oh, yeah, of course. Thank you guys so much for coming on and talking about this. And I bet that this symposium is going to be really cool.

07:07
CJ Jones
No, it definitely will be. And you know, the symposium isn't the only place that you can build that imagination and scholarship, those networks. The African American Cultural center has so many programs to offer for everybody to come and explore and learn something new every day. So don't let the learning stop there. Come to our symposium and then come and join us for all the other things that the AACC has to offer.

07:33
Sophs Magnanini
Yes, that's awesome.

07:34
Destinee Wormack
Yes. And then also too, we're going to shout out to the AACC as well because we do also have a VIP program. So any students looking to volunteer, get intern or practicum hours, you can do that with our center as well. So we already have about good handful of students participating, volunteering on and off campus, building their resume, making connections and most importantly, serving the community. And so everyone should be aware of that. And if you're interested, definitely sign up on our website.

08:11
CJ Jones
Yes.

08:12
Sophs Magnanini
I just wanted to thank you guys so much for coming in and talking about the symposium, by your research and also about the Cultural Center. It's really important what you guys are doing and it's also just so cool and interesting. And I bet there's also so many other presentations that are just as cool. So, yeah, everyone listening, go and check that out. Is there anything else you guys would like to add kind of before we sign off?

08:38
CJ Jones
No. Thank you for the opportunity. This was great and it's great to talk to you. Hopefully there will be more opportunities in the future.

08:46
Sophs Magnanini
As we come up to the end of the episode, I just want to thank you all for listening and I really hope you guys can go and check out this symposium. I know I probably will. As well as just the Cultural center itself. Just really amazing people all throughout and especially at the symposium, the research there is going to be so cool. The different projects, the different people. So I just really suggest that you guys go and check that out. But thank you all for listening to Oak City Move once again. I'm your host, Sofia Magnanini, and if you're interested in listening to this episode again or to past episodes of the show, you can go to wknc.org podcast and make sure to tune into our show every other Monday on WKNC 88.1 FM Raleigh.
